The Political Race and Friendships

For the last couple of weeks I've had a bit of a running conversation via e-mail with an old Air Force buddy about racism, especially concerning politics, and the Obama presidential campaign specifically. It has been exasperating to an extent because I allow him to get my goat, which puts me on the defensive, and that isn't, to say the least, the strategy that leads to positive persuasion. I'll be honest, I enjoy debate, but I'm lousy at persuasive argument. I make a lousy sales person because I often forget the dictum, " always be closing ," and meander around the showroom of ideas picking up shiny things and get momentarily and thus, fatally distracted. Just because I enjoy something doesn't translate automatically into being very good at something, if it did, I'd be a great golfer and a world renowned movie critic. Enjoying the passion of defending a set of beliefs based on evidence and reason, doesn't mean you will become particularly good at i...

Powell and "Race"

I'm waiting for someone to explain to me how Powell - a former National Security Advisor to Reagan, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Secretary of State, a literal defender of America, is picking a man who would make America less safe. - J. Hill - Cali Before I ruminate endlessly about the evils of racism which are legion, I'd like to talk about it on a more personal level due to some particularly fruitless debates with a friend (not all his fault, I admit to a some serious and exasperated intolerance). I just want to point out something I've come to see via some evolving thoughts I've been contemplating while canvassing and phone-banking for Senator Obama and fielding my friends' complaints that I'm being too sensitive and a hypocrite (e.g. reverse racist). Of course Barack Hussein Obama isn't purely "African American," no more than Colin Powell (who is actually of Caribbean descent). There is no such thing as "purely" anything when it come...

Can McCain restrain his Hulk-itude one more time?

Hey, it's just the future of mankind or whatever... and it's at least safe to say he's locked up the bigot-vote with his dog-whistle comments and openly disdainful body language towards him, not to mention, the "who is Obama really " Willy Horten- ish ads run by the ghosts of Lee Atwater that obviously call the shots for McCain campaign. And the next debate is on domestic policy? Surely that's McCain's strong suit right? Oh my, I almost, almost feel sorry for McCain. To be perfectly honest, I kind of liked the old codger, especially when he went up against Shrub in 2000 and called Falwell and Robertson and Dobson for what they are, "agent's of intolerance." But, I guess he'd fooled me, because he said that, and complained about negative campaigning out of expediency and not conviction way back then before 9/11, Gulf War II, torture, and now the collapse of the world economy, etc. I've seen less awkward divorce proceedings.... Sure...
